Blue Penguin Colony Oamaru

During the conference there will be an optional excursion by train to the town of Oamaru to see little penguins. The fieldtrip will occur during Monday afternoon and will visit the historic area of Oamaru and the Oamaru Blue Penguin Colony. Oamaru is a town renowned for Victorian architecture, and the historic area has beautiful heritage buildings that house a variety of galleries, shops and new and traditional crafts. Participants on the fieldtrip will have time to explore the town before attending the nightly viewing of the little penguins as they return ashore to Colony. The Oamaru Blue Penguin Colony is Oamaru’s largest tourist attraction and is the home to nearly 200 breeding pairs. The train will return participants to Dunedin in the evening after the viewing.
