Fiordland penguins/tawaki in Milford Sound

This trip to Milford Sound will take place immediately after the conference, departing Dunedin Thursday 29th August, returning to Dunedin Friday 30th August.

Milford Sound is a fiord that is known for towering Mitre Peak, rainforests clinging to almost vertical mountain flanks and hundreds of waterfalls, which plummet down its sheer sides (if it rains). The fiord is home to the enigmatic Fiordland penguin/tawaki. Milford Discovery Centre and Underwater Observatory offers views of rare black coral and other marine life.

We will depart from Dunedin early Thursday morning, arriving in the fjord in the afternoon and embarking on a special cruise of Milford Sound with opportunities to observe Fiordland penguins/tawaki at their landing sites. We also hope to be able to include a visit to the Discovery Centre, provide the opportunity to sea kayak in Harrison Cove, and a barbecue on the cruise boat sun deck before returning to Te Anau for an overnight stay. Buses will depart Te Anau early Friday morning, arriving back in Dunedin mid-afternoon.

Cost $120 per person for transport.

Costs will cover bus transport from Dunedin to Fiordland and back as well as activities in Milford Sound, but not accommodation. Participants must book their own accommodation in Te Anau. Please ensure your accommodation booking is within walking distance of the i-Site Visitor Information Centre as there will be no taxis operating when we arrive.
